Pulling up in front of the dope house, Bumpy and Stella got out and went in, leaving Bertha and Leonard in the car alone, where they engaged in a conversation.
“How long you been in the hotel?” Bertha asked, Leonard.
“Oh, I don’t know, five or six years, I guess.”
“You ain’t got no woman living with you in all that time? You seem to be a good catch.”
“Guess I ain’t met the right one yet. Most of the women in this place are only out for themselves, and are strung out. I’m looking for someone who has her own means, and only wants a man for companionship. I’m having a hard enough time supporting myself, let alone a woman too. Not only that, I don’t mind if she does a little something-something, hell I does a little something myself, but I don’t need someone who is begging all the time. That will bring a man down, and is too much pressure on the relationship. Plus I wants a woman who’s honest. I ain’t worried about no sex, as long as she’s honest with me about it, and allows me to do the same thing she’s doing. If she don’t want me doing it, she shouldn’t do it” he answered. “You follow me — know what I’m saying? I won’t mess around if she doesn’t. I been there and done that. Done did it all — ain’t nothing I feel I’m missing, so I’m fine with a one on one.”
“Damn, Leonard, that was a mouth full. And if you mean it, you’re going to make some woman very, very, happy,” complimented, Bertha.
“Thanks,” Leonard accepted.
Bumpy and Stella came out of the dope house. Stella got into the car, while Bumpy stood outside.
“TC said you can come in and meet him yourself, if you wants too. I told him you was cool,” Bumpy told Bertha.
“Sure I’ll meet him. Lead the way,” she told Bumpy.
Stella asked Leonard what he and Bertha was talking about while they were in the house? Leonard told her they was just talking about what makes a good relationship.
“Why you ask that?” he asked, Stella.
“Boy, you can’t see it? She kind of likes you,” Stella pointed out.
“Naw, she’s got a man,” Leonard said, rejecting her observation.
“Well, she might have a man, but she still likes you. She’d probably deny it if you asked her, but she does, and just between me and you, I do too,” Stella persisted, and admitted.
“Oh, well, if you say so. Don’t mean nothing to me. She’s nice looking and all, but I don’t step on nobody’s toes, and that includes your man, Fred.”
“Yeah, Leonard, that’s one of the reasons she likes you. You’re kind of halfway decent and she can see that in you.”
“Well, that’s nice to know, but I would never say anything to her, but, and this is a big but, if she and her man should happen to break up, and she approached me, I might take a look, you know what I mean?
